I had quite the close call yesterday. I didn't notice a step in restaurant and literally stepped into thin air. I managed to stay upright and didn't hurt myself. The wonders of Tai Ji [Moving for Better Balance]. Many thanks to you!

All About Paces in Placesâ„¢

Evy Horton is one of two Americans with a Master of Science - Physical Activity for Health. Back in the U.S. after completing her degree in Scotland, Evy was moved (pun intended!) to create Paces in Places to promote & increase participation in physical activity—especially walking— for health.

Why? Because present levels of physical inactivity are a global health issue. Because physical activity has such wonderful potential for positive health benefits in our individual lives & communities.

During her post-graduate course in Scotland, Evy was delighted to train as a Walk Leader with Paths for All, including walking for strength & balance. Evy also volunteered with the Scottish charities RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People), Health in Mind, & LINKnet Mentoring.

As a follow-on to her MSc, Evy joined AmeriCorps in October 2019, committing to 10½ months of national service in the Healthy Futures focus area. As Health & Wellness Outreach Specialist with Full Life Care, Evy served older adult residents in the Seattle Senior Housing Program at Seattle Housing Authority, delivering programs aimed to reduce social isolation & increase participation in physical activity.

In her role, Evy: developed health promotion materials, facilitated programs to foster social interaction and increase physical activity, implemented and led exercise classes, implemented a walking group, conducted surveys to measure performance, and trained as a Level-1 Instructor in the evidence-based fall prevention intervention to teach Tai Ji Quan – Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB)
.

And that was before the COVID-19 pandemic. From mid-March 2020 'til the end of her service in mid-August, Evy continued to serve remotely though more broadly across the greater population of residents of the buildings in SHA's Seattle Senior Housing Program.

Under the sustained pressure of the pandemic, in December 2020, Evy moved to Vashon Island for her work at the local Senior Center. As Program Manager, she aimed to continue to support healthier futures via the creation of a brand new aging-in-place Villages initiative that was funded by King County's Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy.

Further details may be found at Evy's LinkedIn profile.

When I think of physical activity, it’s anything that keeps you active...it's not being sedentary.
